The Underfall Yard
The Underfall Yard is a working boat-yard at the west side of the floating harbour. I was fortunate to have been asked to document the interior of the old buildings before a major renovation in 2015.
In 2023, the yard was all but destroyed when a new employee set fire to it. We are still waiting for the rebuilding to take place.
Here are four galleries showing the Mathew (a replica of John Cabot’s ship - opposite), the boatbuilders (before the fire), the slipway and my images of the old interiors.
The Mathew
This modern reconstruction of the original Matthew was built between 1994–1996 on Redcliffe Quay for the 1997 voyage to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Cabot’s most famous journey to Newfoundland and back.
Below are images of the Mathew during its annual ‘bottom-scrub’ on the Underfall Yard slipway.
Boat builders, before the fire.
Such a vibrant place with happy people doing what they loved to do. Full access for the public to wander around and ask questions. Not sure when it will be back to looking like this…
Slipway
The original slipway, which is used to repair and renovate all sorts of craft that use the harbour.
Interiors
Interiors of the main buildings before the renovation. For all images on my google photos.
